Nancy Pelosi was being smarmy back when she said that we would have to pass President Obama’s health-care bill in order to find out what was in it.
Pity the Nancester herself apparently never bothered to read the fine print in her magnum opus (pun, as we shall see, intended.)
Seems that Harry Reid, in a rare bout of lucidity, inserted Senate amendment 3276, Sec. 2716, part (c).
Reid evidently dropped the provision in to make sure the National Rifle Association would stay on the sideline in the health-care fight.
Savor this for just a moment: President Obama’s landmark legislative achievement, heralded as the finest achievement by just the greatest president ever, contained a measure that suddenly is ever-so inconvenient.
That achievement looks pretty small-bore right now. Perhaps we should expect higher-caliber work in the presidency, but maybe we could just settle for the junior geniuses in the West Wing learning how to read.
Cheap Seats is looking forward to seeing Obama, Pelosi and Reid figuring how to reverse course on their landmark experiment with unintended consequences.
It turns out that Vice President Joe Biden – the chief of Mr. Obama’s gun control committee – was prophetic when he declared the president’s health care bill a “big ‘effin deal.” All of it.
